Hi all I'm Andy Pendleton a little while ago I decided to set up a bike project in Frodsham, as i live and work in Frodsham "Morrison's" I have seen a big increase in cycling and like a lot of people I wanted to get back into it but didn't have the money for a new bike, so I saved up a bit and luckily got a decent second hand bike.
This was when I decided a project would work In Frodsham. Having the idea was one thing but I wasn't sure where to start, so I contacted @graham evans "mp" and he loved the idea and put me in contact with Kate Dodgson who was a great help she pointed me in the right direction, telling me what I should do and giving me more contacts.
I've had a great deal of support from nearly everyone I've spoken to about the project says its fantastic. Some people I would like to say Thankyou to, @peter Lloyd, Lynn Riley, &Andrew Dawson, @sarah dobbins Ryan Edghill,Allen Wales there are many more. a big Thankyou to all who have donated and @cheshire police for there donations.
So my journey has begun and the project is going well. Here is a bit more info on the project for those who have continued to read.
Frodsham Bike Project has only just begun in Frodsham but has already attracted around 30 people working out of only a couple of garden sheds. The bike project works with all ages in one of the most deprived area’s in Frodsham. The group works with older and younger people to focus on repairing and re-using discarded bikes. Its youngest member is just 5 years old and its oldest member is over 60 years old.
Our aim is:
• To provide a valuable and empowering space for underprivileged and marginalised groups of people within our community whose lives would greatly improve through the benefit of having accessible, affordable and sustainable transportation.
• To provide an inclusive, non-judgemental, vibrant and supportive workshop environment for volunteers and project-users alike, from all walks of life, that encourages and promotes skill-sharing and independence, where new skills are learned in a way that is empowering for all and friendships are made.
• To divert and redirect functional bicycles and their working parts from recycling and landfill. Through doing this, we help to lower the demand for raw materials, promote the ideas of reuse within our community and offer an alternative to simply buying new.
The Frodsham Bike Project is an independent non-profit making group with a big ambition to make more of a difference to those in need in our community.
Where I would like the project to go……
We would like to expand the bike project to work with even more people in need such as:
• Young Offenders
• Working with the Unemployment
• Younger people in need of diversionary activity (ASB)
• Older isolated people
Working with public sector partners this could operate as a form of social prescribing or a referral model to help support local people to get back on track.
